Cricket Match Day

On a sunlit morning at Mutare Sports Club, where the echoes of recent rains still lingered in the freshness of the outfield, a cricketing spectacle of historic proportions unfolded between Westside1 and Manicaland Cricket Club. The stage was set for a contest, but what followed transcended the ordinary and etched itself into the folklore of the game.

Winning the toss, Captain Vincent Masekesa elected to bat first, a decision that would soon prove inspired. Westside1, resplendent in their golden maroon kit reminiscent of the West Indies cricket team, carried both confidence and intent onto the field.

The innings began with Kudzai Sauramba and Tinashe Chiora opening the batting. Chiora’s stay was brief, falling for 14 in the fifth over, but his departure brought together a partnership that would lay the foundation for something monumental. The classical “KK” combination of Kudzai Sauramba and Kevin Kasuza stitched together a fluent 79-run stand, propelling the score to 116 in under 13 overs. Kasuza’s blistering 63 off just 40 balls, decorated with audacious stroke play, was eventually halted by the spin of Kudakwashe Jambi, caught at leg slip.

Into the arena walked the rising talent Tatenda Maposa, whose arrival injected further venom into the Westside1 assault. With strokes of brutal authority, Maposa sent the ball soaring beyond the serene boundaries of Mutare Sports Club, twice clearing the ground in emphatic fashion. At the other end, Sauramba anchored the innings with composure before departing for a steady 33, leaving Westside1 at 131/3.

The dismissal of Captain Masekesa at 204/5, caught in the covers, might have suggested a slowdown. Instead, it triggered one of the most astonishing passages of batting ever witnessed in club cricket.

What followed over the next 29 overs was nothing short of extraordinary. Moses Karimaguti and Frank Mwazviita unleashed a relentless assault that tore through the Manicaland attack and rewrote the record books. Their partnership yielded a staggering 301 runs in just 177 balls—a display of power, precision and unyielding aggression.

Karimaguti, the chief aggressor, dismantled bowlers with calculated ferocity. In a particularly punishing over, he took Jambi apart, dispatching consecutive deliveries for towering sixes—first over wide long-off, then deep mid-wicket, both disappearing beyond sight. Mwazviita soon joined the carnage, notably plundering four boundaries in a single over off Valentino, showcasing his range with pulls and drives to all parts of the field.

As the sun climbed overhead, it seemed to energize the duo further. Sixes rained across the ground as the scoreboard surged past 300. Mwazviita’s innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression, amassing 18 fours and seven sixes, while Karimaguti powered his way toward a memorable milestone.

Karimaguti reached his century first—his maiden of the season—off just 70 balls, greeted by a roaring crowd and jubilant teammates. Not to be outdone, Mwazviita soon followed, elegantly guiding a ball to third man for four to complete his century in 69 balls. It was a moment of symmetry and shared brilliance.

By the 41st over, the score read an almost unbelievable 415/5. Spectators arriving late might have suspected an error on the scoreboard, but the relentless stroke play left no doubt. The final nine overs added a further 90 runs, as the duo continued their exhibition of dominance.

By the end of the innings, Westside1 had amassed a colossal 504/5 in 50 overs—a total that seemed less like a target and more like a monument.

When Fortune Mhlanga and Valentino Rufurwokuda walked in to bat, Manicaland Cricket Club faced a task of daunting proportions. Tawanda Maposa struck early!

The rising star with a beauty in the fourth over, Valentino bowled with an unplayable jaffa, Mutare Sports Club 19/1. Jack Macheke fell victim to some athletic fielding by Captain Masekesa's runout , a brilliant throw from the cow corner, MSC 35/2. In form Fortune Mhlanga bowled out Bill Kwambana as Mutare Sports Club crumbled under the scoreboard pressure. Willard Chirenje was undone by the Westside1 skipper, caught at deep extra cover by the day's hero Moses Karimaguti. Tinotenda Jambi showed some courage amid the impossible, hitting 4 boundaries in quick succession. Captain Vinny struck again, Prince Chimeri clean bowled with a leggy, a fifer for the captain.

The fall of Tinotenda Jambi broke the camels' back, caught at short third of the bowling of Shane Muchenje. Frank Mwazviita reminded the audience who the day belonged to, taking a brilliant catch at extra cover, Vinny the sculptor again. When Silent Mujaji retired, the final nail in the coffin had been cast and the inevitable was confirmed. Manicaland Cricket Club were bowled out for 107/9 in just 21.5 overs, handing Westside1 a resounding 397-run victory.

If ever a match belonged to two men, it was this one. Karimaguti and Mwazviita, bound by a record-breaking 301-run partnership, delivered a performance for the ages. Words struggle to capture the magnitude of what transpired, but one truth remains clear: this was not just a cricket match. It was history written in golden maroon.
